American nostalgia (2013 NYC)

Still a work in progress, American Nostalgia began as a response to the statement that "20-somethings are apathetic in regards to the political movement of today in comparison to those in the 1960's.  The work was developed as a movement piece with text overlain from President Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King. What was created was remarkable. The struggle to identify which 'movement' to make based on history, that we are already in a moving system that has so much inertia it is difficult to side-step its force, and when we fight one another we are fighting the ideas - expectations that we hold so dear are just a few of the discoveries I made during this process. This work is timeless in that it could be see in any decade and still have relevance. As I continue to develop this for, I want to work with communities to ask their personal accounts of being a part of, beginning, or observing movements. I was fortunate to have four wonderful artists who I attended CalArts with to help me bring this work to life for its first performance at Judson Memorial Church in 2013.
